Go back...
I thought it might add some interesting content, describing my computer configurations. That, and the obvious fact that I really get a kick out of it.

Since the early 90's, the personal computer and PC hardware has become a big hobby for me. This is great for my career, because I'm a Computer Programmer. I think that to be successful in a programming career, you really need some level of proficiency with the hardware. Without a working knowledge with the tools of your trade, at least a little bit, they become just another crutch.

So back in October of 1991, I bought my very first computer: a Gateway 2000, configured with the latest Intel 486/33DX CPU, with a 210 MB Western Digital hard drive, 8 MB of RAM, and the Diamond SpeedStar Pro video card. It came pre-loaded with the then-new Windows 3.0 interface over DOS 5.0. This little screamer was the high-end home computer of it's time. But being 1991, that meant no sound, no Internet, no CDROM, no printer, and this sad little 14inch VGA monitor. All this for merely $3,000... and I had to take out a loan just to get it. Well, seeing as how I was earning a junior salary back then, it was no small effort, let me tell you.

Since that initial purchase, I've never bought a complete system again, opting instead to upgrade one component at a time. Sometimes you save money that way, but more often than not you pay a premium for cutting edge parts. It can be upsetting and exciting both, trying to balance a stable configuration this way, but you sure do learn a lot!

And what an investment! Since 1991, my career has only improved. Having a strong familiarity with PC hardware often enriches my job. And at home it gives me a safe hobby in something that has a positive impact for my family. Can it be frustrating at times, making all this gadgetry work together? Sure, it can. But is it fun? You bet!

In 2003, we added a second computer to the household, affectionately known as "Katie's Computer", although now it's really for both Katie and Krissy. It's primary purpose is to host games and educational software for my daughters, but it's proved invaluable to have a second PC in the house. Certainly it was fun to build, and is a great place for hand-me-down components! To find out more, click either of the links here:
